Today we looked at internet safety and the difference between personal and private information.  We also looked at how to make a strong password.

Essential Question

We started class by asking the question of what information is okay to share online.

After we discussed the question we played a game to get us thinking about the information we share.  The following statements were made and students raised their hand if it applied to them.

  • Raise your hand if you or your family speak another language besides English.

  • Raise your hand if you have two or more siblings.

  • Raise your hand if you have a pet.

  • Raise your hand if you have ever been on YouTube.

  • Raise your hand if you have ever shared something about yourself online.

Did You Know?

The human brain is wired to share with others.

When your brain gets excited, you feel emotions, and something called the “autonomic nervous system” causes you to want to share with others.

Sharing with others has lots of cool benefits:

It helps you feel good! Sharing positive experiences helps you remember them, even after they’re over.

It helps you learn! Sharing knowledge helps everyone be more informed.

It helps you connect! Sharing your interests is a way to make new friends and strengthen relationships.

It helps you persuade! Sharing what you care about can inspire others to act and to support good causes.

Private VS Personal

After learning the difference between private and personal information we looked at different types of information.  As a class we decided if the information was personal or private.

  • home address (private)

  • email address (private)

  • date of birth (private)

  • favorite music (personal)

  • how many brothers and sisters you have (personal)

  • phone numbers (private)

  • favourite food (personal)

  • name of your pet (personal)

Work Time

Today we had time to work on our roller coasters.  If you had finished your roller coaster you had the opportunity to play an internet safety game, go on epic and read books on forces, or listen to a podcast about tectonic plates

I hope you enjoy these activities and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Passwords

We discussed how to keep our information safe online with strong passwords.  We looked at five different passwords and decided where it fell on the scale from strong to weak.  Some key things that we talked about when designing passwords is that they are stronger if they have numbers, uppercase letters mixed with lowercase, symbols, and aren't something easily recognized.
