The Spheres

Today we talked about the different spheres of earth and did an experiment showing the different layers of the atmosphere

The City That Was Never Built

To start class I shared an adventure I took to the town that was never built in Windsor.  This town was going to be called Ojibway.  This town ran into many problems financially and structurally.  They did start building the town by laying sidewalks, storm drains and ditches.  The final straw was when they were digging they realized this area had a lot of salt in the ground and would not provide stable structure.  They abandoned the idea, but the sidewalks remain.  To learn more check out this link and explore the phots on the right.

Prereading

Before watching the video on the spheres we read through the different spheres and discovered what was a part of each sphere.

The 4 spheres are the geosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere.

Weather Journal

We looked at the weather outside and continued our weather journal.  Some of the items we included were;

  • Date

  • Type of Weather

  • Clouds I see

  • Temperature

  • What I can do for this weather

We will be recording the weather all week and seeing if we can make a prediction about the weather.

Video

We watched a video about the 4 spheres of earth.  Before the experiments in the video we made our own predictions and shared what we thought would happen.

Review

After the video we answered a couple of questions;

1) Which of Earth’s spheres are humans part of?

2) Which of Earth’s spheres do humans impact?  What are some examples?

After the questions we played an online quiz game.  The game can be found here: https://quizizz.com/join/quiz/5e837d9ed4ceb3001b3649f7/start

Atmosphere Experiment

To demonstrate the layers of Earth's atmosphere I demonstrated a density experiment.  The reason the layers of Earth's atmosphere don't mix is because gasses in each layer become less and less dense, just like the liquids.  This allows each layer to remain separated.  For todays experiment our layers were;

  • Base of the cup = the earth

  • Honey = Troposphere. This is were we live and where clouds and weather are.

  • Dish Soap = Stratosphere. This is where airplanes fly, just above the clouds.

  • Water = Mesosphere (green).

  • Coconut or vegetable Oil = Thermosphere.

  • Hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol = Exosphere This is the level of the atmosphere that is very thin and blends in to space.
