Predicting the Weather

Today we did an experiment to see how pine cones might help us predict the weather.  We also looked at how other animals and objects in nature could help us predict the weather.

Weather on Other Planets

We started by watching a video on the weather on the 4 closest planets to the sun.  These are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.  We learned about how warm some of these planets are as well as some of the storms that have been going on for years.

Predicting the Weather

After exploring the ways that meteorologist predict the weather we looked at how nature can predict the weather.  We looked at how crickets can tell us temperature, how pine cones can predict moisture, and how animals can predict storms tp name a few.

Experiment

To end class we looked at what happened to pine cones when they were exposed to moisture compared to dry air.  We took two pine cones and placed one in a container with cold water, and the other in no water.  We saw that the pine cone closed up in an effort to protect its seeds for when there was wind.

I hope you enjoy these activities and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
