Magnetism and Roller Coasters
Today we continued talking about magnetism and looked at potential energy and kinetic energy. We finished by getting by working on designing our own roller coasters.

Magnets
Today we started by reviewing magnetism with this generation genius video. We got to see some very powerful magnets in action, and talk about magnets on roller coasters.

Roller Coaster
We watched one more video on roller coasters and how they use forces to move.

Kinetic and Potential Energy
We reviewed kinetic and potential energy today with the roller coaster simulation from yesterday. We then practiced with a different roller coaster picture.
Try It On Your Own
Here is the roller coaster we looked at in class. We worked through the different points of kinetic and potential energy on the roller coaster. We determined that when the car on the roller coaster goes up its building potential energy. When the roller coaster goes down it uses kinetic energy.

Your Turn
Here is another roller coaster you can try. Look and see where you think the roller coaster uses kinetic and potential energy.

VR Images
Using the website below we looked at different 360 images. Students are very interested in looking at a picture from every direction as if though they are there. We only looked at roller coasters today, but feel free to check out some of the other awesome pictures they have.

Roller Coaster Assignment
Today we started working on our roller coaster design assignment. Students are tasked with creating their own roller coaster that is able to show different forces at work. The will also need to tell when and where the roller coaster uses kinetic and potential energy.

When designing your rollercoaster make it attractive to everyone who comes into your amusement park! What colours will you use? How many hills and loops will it have? What kind of car do you ride in? Will you include any other details in your drawing?

Students can also create an entire theme park if they want to as long as they can still complete the above goals with the roller coaster. This roller coaster can either be drawn, or built with parent permission out of resources at home. (lego, paper, cardboard, etc.)

Most importantly have fun with the assignment and practice what we have been learning.

I hope you enjoy these activities and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
