Forces

Today we reviewed some of the activities from yesterday, as well as started diving into our next science unit.  We will be focusing on forces and the specific expectations are that by the end your child can;

1.assess the impact of various forces on society and the environment;

2. investigate devices that use forces to create controlled movement;

3. demonstrate an understanding of how forces cause movement and changes in movement.

Deep Sea vs Outer Space

If you haven't already filled out this form to tell me what you would prefer between outer space and the deep sea please do so.  Click on the link below and you will be taken to a Microsoft form where you can let me know.

Podcast and Kindness

Below is a link to a podcast that adds additional detail to the conversation about deep sea vs outer space if you weren't in class for our discussion.

After we had our discussion we came up with tasks for our weekly challenge.  This weeks challenge is to show kindness to ourselves, a family member, or friend.  Think about how you might be able to show kindness this week.

Forces

Today we started learning about forces.  Here is the definition we looked at during class: A force is a push or a pull.  When the wind pushes a sailboat through the water, it is exerting a force.  When gravity pulls an apple toward the ground , that is a force as well.  Forces can make things move, change their speed, or change their shape.

The video to the left is the one we watched in class today.  The video talks about where we can find forces on the playground.

Gravity

Below are the four forces we learned about today.  For each one come up with one additional example of these forces that you know or have experienced.

Planets pull objects towards them. Earth pulls you and other objects toward it. This pulling force is called gravity

Muscular

The muscles in your body are attached to bones.  Muscles pull on these bones.  This is called muscular force.  It allows you to move in many different ways.

Buoyancy

When you jump in a pool, some of the water splashes up.  Your body pushed down on the water and the water pushed up on you.  This made the splash.  This upward pushing force is called buoyancy

Friction

When two objects slide over each other they rub and push against each other.  This pushing force is called friction.

I hope you enjoy these activities and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
